The 6th edition of this event will once again be hosted in the beautiful city of Da Nang, which was recently chosen as one of the “52 Places to Go in 2019” by the New York Times thanks to its blend of stunning natural beauty, tourist attractions, food, and more. The event and location not only provide competitors with a memorable experience, but the TECHCOMBANK IRONMAN 70.3 Vietnam event is also a major economic contributor to the central region every year the competition is held.
From a single event in 2015, the event has become a multi-day, multi-sport festival that brings together athletes from around the world and has continued to inspire more Vietnamese athletes to embrace sport and the healthy lifestyle that is at the core to completing one of the hardest, single-day endurance challenges on the planet. The number of local competitors has grown from only 46 Vietnamese athletes participating in the inaugural event in 2015 to over 1,000 in the 2019 event. On a total participation level, the 2019 edition also witnessed over 2,200 participants, who represented over 60 countries, making it the largest multi-sport festival in Vietnam.

“Being involved with the TECHCOMBANK IRONMAN 70.3 Vietnam is truly humbling,” said Mr. Onslo Carrington, Sunrise Events Vietnam General Manager. “Watching this event grow from year to year is inspiring. The TECHCOMBANK IRONMAN 70.3 Vietnam competition is a major event in the region, serving as a qualifier for international events. In addition to total 60 qualifying slots for competitors to gain entry to the 2020 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship in Taupo, New Zealand, there is also a prize purse totaling $15,000 USD is also up for grabs for top finishers in the event.
“Since being one of only 46 local participants at the first IRONMAN 70.3 event in Vietnam in 2015, it’s truly inspiring to see how much this competition has grown and evolved over the years,” said the 2020 TECHCOMBANK IRONMAN 70.3 Vietnam Ambassador Duong Nguyen Vu, PhD, a professor at the School of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering of Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. He was one of the first competitors at the inaugural competition in Da Nang in 2015. “I’m truly honored to serve as an ambassador of this event, and being given the opportunity to help grow the sport I love in my home country. It is exciting to help engage athletes of all ages and abilities and encourage people to adopt the healthy lifestyle that are what events like this are all about.”
New Registration Format for 2020
This year’s competition also marks an updated registration format. Previously, Early Bird registration remained open for a two-month period, followed by two-months for regular registration, and a final phase for late registration. Effective for the upcoming competition, Priority phase will be the new phase which replaces for Early Birds phase, will end after the first 600 registrants. The regular phase of registration will then be initiated with additional spots available for late additions to the competition as well.
In addition to the updated format, Early Bird registrants will receive a complimentary iTAB option to personalize their race medals with their name and finish time. The special, personalized plate is added as part of the ribbon and medal, helping competitors celebrate their race day. Base on the new format, the athletes have to take the decision to participate as soon as they can if they do not want to miss the race.

Staging a Multi-Sports Festival for All Ages
Complementing the TECHCOMBANK IRONMAN 70.3 Vietnam on May 10th will be a weekend of exciting activities including the expo area, a series of workshops about nutrition, competitive rules and regulations guideline, and sessions of sharing the experience from the experts and professional athletes. Simultaneously, these are some small-scale races but still really attractive.
The Newborns Run Out is a highlight of the multi-sports festival and will be held on Friday, May 8th . This is a fun race for participants and the local community to help promote awareness of the important work of Newborns Vietnam, a charity organization committed to reducing infant mortality. For those still working their way towards undertaking an IRONMAN 70.3 competition, the shorter format SUNRISE SPRINT VIETNAM will be happened on Saturday, May 9th , consists of a 750m swim, 20km bike ride,
and a 5km run that will follow portions of the TECHCOMBANK IRONMAN 70.3 Vietnam event course. Similar to the 70.3 event, the Sprint will also have a relay category.
In the morning of the same day, IRONKIDS Vietnam will feature an ocean swim for those participating in the Aquathlon (swim/run) and Triathlon (swim/bike/run) options for competitors as young as 6 all the way up to age 14. Distances will vary depending on the ages of the competitors.
